The Dates for the 2012 Portland Zine Symposium!

The 2012 Portland Zine Symposium will be held on August 11-12 and will be at the same location as last year. Stay tuned for details about table registration!

Portland Zine Symposium wants your artwork!

Hello Zinesters and PZS fans!

The Portland Zine Symposium is looking for art submissions for the 2012 poster. This year's theme is "Sea of Zines." Your art submission should be your creative interpretation of that theme.

We encourage artists to use any medium or style. We strongly prefer that the chosen artist is able to assist us in the process of transferring (resizing / cropping / etc) the image multiple mediums.

The formatting guidelines are simple:

  • We are looking for a 11" wide x 17" tall poster that will also be used in other formats (the website, post cards, buttons, stickers, etc), so your design needs to be visible and striking at multiple sizes and resolutions (or have smaller, breakaway pieces).
  • Only 3 colors! The design will eventually be silk screened / screen printed onto t-shirts, so limit your colors to black, white and one other color.

Your design should include (or be able to include once all details are finalized) the following:

  • the theme - Sea of Zines
  • the dates - TBA (for now)
  • the place - Refuge 116 SE Yamhill
  • the website - www.pdxzines.com
  • "12th Annual Portland Zine Symposium" and the year "2012"
  • "A conference and zine social exploring facets of independent publishing and DIY culture."

Submission deadline is February 25th.

Submissions can be emailed to pdxzines@gmail.com (most strongly preferred), mailed (to PO Box 5901 Portland, OR 97228-5901), or dropped off at the IPRC.

We can't wait to see what you come up with!
-the PZS organizers

The Portland Zine Symposium is free conference and zine social exploring facets of independent publishing and DIY culture. The Portland Zine Symposium is a two day event held in Portland, Oregon every summer since 2001. It consists of two days of of workshops, panels, discussions, games and tabling of zines and independent media.

The Portland Zine Symposium aims to promote greater community between diverse creators of independent publications and art. This fun and free event helps people share their work while exchanging their skills and information related to zine culture. Through workshops, panels and discussions, Portland Zine Symposium explores the role and effect of all types of zines.

11th Annual PZS is HERE!

First, thank you so much for being apart of the Portland Zine Symposium for it's eleventh year. This year has been hard, moving locations across the river,
getting a late start planning everything due to finding a new venue, having less workshop space, etc. We appreciate your patience in all of this.

Here's everything you need to know (hopefully) about the final and biggest stages of Portland Zine Symposium this year!

The Portland Zine symposium is FREE to attend and opens to all attendees at 10:00AM on Saturday until closing down at 5:00PM, then again on Sunday at 10:00AM until 4:00PM on Sunday.

During this time, there will be over 140 individual exhibitors showing off all their hard work for you to peruse, as well as workshops all day, each day. Here is the list of workshops for this year:
http://pdxzines.com/workshops/

The remaining outreach events and parties are:

The events happening the next few days the IPRC Open House and Open Mic, the main symposium at The Refuge, theZinester's Feud and Karaoke at Floating World on Saturday, etc. (http://pdxzines.com/events/) -- this is everything that makes it worthwhile for us, as organizers, after all our work to put it togetehr.. To see everyone come together, trade/buy/sell zines, share ideas and information, and celebrate our community together!

Please share as much info as you can about PZS via whatever means you can
(fliers, facebook, twitter, blogging, etc) and let's have a great Portland Zine
Symposium!

In solidarity,
The 2011 Sympanistas

A PZS 2011 General Update! (07/12/11)

Hey zinsters, here's a general update, to keep you in the loop. Be sure to read until the end, where we thank you for being here!

Word Game Wednesday at The Waypost

The last one before PZS is tomorrow, July 13th, at 6pm! The event is free, but there is a suggested fee of $1 per game per player, as we are trying to fund-raise. However, with every game you play, your $1 fee also gets you a raffle ticket! Every week we'll be raffling off PZS shirts, PZS mugs, and that totally rad, 10th Anniversary Special Edition Zine Program. We'll also sell you extra raffle tickets, if you're so inclined, and have a donation jar as extra-giving zine-enthusiasts are always appreciated! http://pdxzines.com/events/wordgamewednesdays/

24hr Zine Challenge

It’s only a few days away, starting July 16th at 10:00am at the IPRC! We only have about 8 spots left for challengers, so get on registering for it if you haven’t. Can’t make it? Well, consider sponsoring someone who is going for it. $10 or more gets you a copy of the zine if they finish and you only make the donation if they actually finish! http://pdxzines.com/events/24hrzinechallenge/

Bike-In Movie

Movie TBA (vote here until July 13th: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/MCB7HCN) and will be held at SE Division Pl and SE Grand (under the 99E overpass) on July 29th. Arrive at 8pm, movie starts at dusk. Zines are awesome and July is International Zine Month! Help us celebrate and support the 11th Annual Portland Zine Symposium while enjoying a nice movie in the great outdoors! To help support PZS, we'll be asking a $1-5 donation, but no one will be turned away due to lack of funds. There will also be Whiffies Fried Pies for purchase and a PZS raffle, so bringing cash if ya got it is definitely a good idea! http://pdxzines.com/events/bikeinmovie/

Tabling at the 2011 Portland Zine Symposium

Both Saturday and Sunday are now FULL! You don’t have to have a table to enjoy the Portland Zine Symposium but If you want to be on the waiting list for either day, please go ahead and fill out the online registration (selecting none, as no tables are available), and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can with your waiting list position. If you are registered and have table, but have not paid, please pay for your table ASAP so that we can confirm you and your information can go live on the website (we have your information in our database, but you are invisible until you are confirmed). http://pdxzines.com/tabling/

Workshops

At The Refuge, we’ll only have two rooms to conduct workshops, panels and discussions in, so we’ll be having less of them this year than usual. If you’d like to host a zine-related workshop, panel or discussion, please submit a form for our review and probable approval. Past ideas have ranged from hands-on DIY workshops like bookbinding to panels and discussions about various zine topics. http://pdxzines.com/workshops/

Volunteering

We need volunteers! We have a variety of duties we'll be needing assistance with the upcoming weeks; some are as simple as grabbing a stack of posters from the IPRC and hanging them up at your favorite, people populated places, while other are more involved, like helping run the info table a couple of hours during PZS. Your involvement level is totally up to you and will be greatly appreciated! We'll even give you a PZS shirt! If you’d like to volunteer, email us at pdxzines@gmail.com and we’ll get you in touch with our volunteer coordinator for this you, Emily. http://pdxzines.com/pr/volunteer/

A Word of Appreciation

We want to thank all of you who write to us every year seeking to table or to be at all involved in the Portland Zine Symposium. As volunteer collective of organizers, we all have jobs and our own projects, so PZS crunch-time can be very overwhelming. We have meetings twice a week, a million emails a day, and hundreds of people we are in contact with to get PZS off the ground and happening every year. So, every compliment and all feedback that we receive is much appreciated, it helps keep us going and helps keep PZS about our zine community and fulfilling the needs of that community. Thanks for bearing with us every year and thanks for continuing to be involved.

PZS Postcards Project and ChipIn!

In case you didn't notice, this year the Portland Zine Symposium has moved from PSU to a new space, The Refuge. We decided to move in order to have a more accessible location and a more convention friendly space. As we grow every year, however, so do our expenses. We do NOT want to turn into an expensive convention, but we need the help of those more in a position to do so more than ever. If you help where you can, that keeps minimum tabling fees lower for those who are unable to afford more.

How you can help the Portland Zine Symposium though our growing pains and to keep our zine community inclusive for all?

1) Participate in the Postcard Project!

Our theme this year is “postmarked.” What better way to celebrate that than with mail? We are offering a pre-addressed and pre-stamped blank post card for you to decorate for $5 in the USA $7 rest of the world (International postcards come with an International Reply Coupon).

>

Once you have colored, drawn, collaged, typed on or otherwise decorated the post card, drop it in the mail to us. All postcards we receive will be on display in a gallery at the 2011 Portland Zine Symposium. This is an inexpensive, fun, and easy way to support the Symposium even if you can’t be there. Get one for yourself! Buy some for friends! Go here, buy lots!

2) You can ChipIn!

Last year, we introduced donation levels with rewards and accepted donations via Paypal and snailmail, but most of our donations came via Paypal. ChipIn is a site that allows all of you to see how much we need, how far we've gotten and to "chip in" yourself using Paypal… You can do as little or as much as you want and our donation levels still apply. If you can't do Paypal, we're happy to have donations mailed, of course.

3) Attend one of our many fundraising events!

We've been hosting Word Game Second Wednesdays at The Waypost the last few months, but be on the lookout for our Bike-In Movie, The 24hr Zine Challenge, Zinester's Music Show, and more for the month of July.

Thanks for all your continuing support!

We will have fun word games like Banangrams, Scrabble, Apples to Apples and more! Drop in on a bike ride up Williams, have a snack or a drink, trade your zine and let you glorious wordiness shine!

How will this help support PZS? The event is free, but there is a fee of $1 per game entrance, as we are trying to fundraise. We've got a couple major announcements for you! First, are winning artwork for PZS 2010 has been chosen! Our winning artist is Lisa Rosalie Eisenberg and you can view the poster here, but, as you can see, her fabulous work has been applied to our website's design! Thanks to all who submitted artwork for the 2010 poster art call, it was a challenging design to pick the work to represent the convention this year. We would also like to announce that a close second was artwork from Brian Kaas, so we plan on making a special edition button from his submission, to be available at PZS, as well as printing his poster art on the back of the program.

Now here's the news you've been waiting for!

Registration for the 10th annual Portland Zine Symposium will open up at 4pm (PST) tomorrow, April 6th.

When you register, be on the lookout for a special question in your form, "Would you like to preorder a Special Edition, 10th Anniversary Program?" It adds just $1 to your donation total and ensures you will get the guaranteed-to-be-popular, zine style program we're cooking up to help commemorate our 1th anniversary!

Also, remember that we're moving from the Smith Ballroom to PSU's Main Gym this year. This means more space and more tables! It also means that PZS has to pay a ton more money to book the space. You can support us a variety of ways, but this year we've adding some special gifts for supporters able to contribute donations. You can check out the donation levels here and you can donate just by clicking here!

As always, we love help at the event, too. Volunteers at the event get cool things like t-shirts and our undying gratitude.

Thanks for your support!

The 10th Annual PZS!

You've emailed, you've posted on our facebook page, you've called and now we're finally able to tell you...

The 10th Annual Portland Zine Symposium will be August 28th & 29th, 2010!

In addition, this year's PZS will not be held in the Smith Ballroom, but it will instead be held at PSU's Peter W. Stott Main Gym.

We should be opening up registration in early April and we will be rolling out a new perk, early bird registration versus late registration.

In other news, you still have a month to try and make your original art THE art work to represent the 2010 Portland Zine Symposium. Just send us your "Zine Arcade!" inspired art! Check out our submissions call for this year: http://groups.google.com/group/portlandzinesymposium/web/2010-poster-art-call---pzs

Guess what else? Moving to a new, bigger location is expensive, so you're going to see a lot of pre PZS events in the months before August to help us raise money for the event without jacking up tabling costs.. But you can start helping us now! We've added a new button to our website to donate to us and you can donate right now:

Art Call: 2009 Portland Zine Symposium design...

Portland Zine Symposium Friends,

PZS is looking for art submissions for the 2009 poster. These year's themes are cats, 9 lives, and "Hang in there!" Your art submission should touch upon one or all of these themes.

The guidelines are simple – We are looking for a 11" wide x 17" tall poster that will also be used in other formats (the web, post cards, buttons, stickers, etc), so your design needs to be visible and striking at multiple sizes and resolutions (or have smaller, breakaway pieces). The design will eventually be silk screened / screen printed onto t-shirts, so limit your colors to black, white and one other color. We encourage artists to use any medium or style. We strongly prefer that the choosen artist is able to assist us in the process of transferring (resizing / cropping / etc) the image multiple mediums.

Your design should include:

  • the theme
  • the dates: July 24th, 25th, 26th
  • the place (Portland State University Smith Memorial Ballroom)
  • the website (www.pdxzines.com)
  • "9th Annual Portland Zine Symposium"
  • "A conference and zine social exploring facets of underground publishing and DIY culture."

Submission deadline is February 25th. Submissions can be emailed to pdxzines@gmail.com, mailed (to PO Box 5901 Portland, OR 97228-5901), or dropped off at the IPRC.

Thanks in advance to all who submit, we look forward to seeing everyone's creative designs!

Thanks for attending the 2008 Portland Zine Symposium!

The 2008 Portland Zine Symposium is over and, wow, it was such a blast!

The organizers would like to thank all attendees, tablers, volunteers, workshop/panel leaders, PSU, Red & Black Cafe, the bands, and donors for being apart of Portland Zine Symposium. Thanks to the help of everyone involved, we were able to have yet another year of zine socializing and community building, which is what PZS is all about.

Once sufficiently recuperated from this year's symposium, we will start working on 2009! We'll be working out the dates, art, and events for next year's PZS by December. We will also be having a meeting for those interested in volunteering around then. You can join the PZS google group here, to get general PZS updates sent directly to you!

We've had a couple things reported missing after the event.. If you found a black hoodie with a patch on one of the front pockets or a black and light-weight rain jacket , please email us so that we can get them to the owner. If you found or lost anything else, please send us an email!

We've got shirts, travel mugs made from corn plastic, stickers, and other merch leftover from PZS. If you're interested in buying any, please send us an email detailing your order and we can send you an invoice to pay us via paypal. Be on the lookout for a whole section to view and buy PZS merch to help support PZS!
