The 10th Annual PZS is one week away!
Posted August 22, 2010
The Portland Zine Symposium is a free, two day conference and social gathering, celebrating independent publishing. PZS features tables and tables (230 tablers each day) full of zines, independently published works, and other DIY items for purchase.A little background: A zine is a self-published magazine usually produced by one person or a small group of people. The Portland Zine Symposium is a place for people to meet, share ideas, learn, and, of course, trade zines. There will be over 30 hands-on workshops and discussions on topics like silk screening, starting distros, radical culture within zine communities, and making zines. Also, this is our tenth year, which is so exciting! Mayor Sam Adams is even reading a proclamation in recognition of the achievement of PZS and the importance of zine culture in Portland on the morning of August 18th!
Numerous local businesses will be helping to promote PZS in a variety of ways, which include donating items for PZS to raffle, helping to provide food/drink during PZS, and providing spaces for fundraising and outreach events. We've already had some of those events, but more are to com the week of PZS, including an IPRC Open House and Open Mic (the evening of August 27th), a Zinester's Feud (the evening of August 28th at Floating World Comics), a Zinester's Music Show (the evening of August 29th at Backspace).
If you'd like to volunteer for the event, you can find more info here.
